Weavings by Deborah Silver

Curator’s Statement

When one thinks of weavings as art, it brings folk art or craft images to mind.  Deborah Silver has taken this medium to a level that gives her art edginess and a contemporary stance.  She creates stunning paintings that utilize textiles as paint.  Her compositional skill and intuitive colors combined with intelligent thoughtful subject matter make for wonderful cultural portraits.  The image of weaving as a feminine art form is completely eradicated with Deborah’s works, even though she happens to be a female weaver.

Artist Statement

By uniting the traditional art of tribal masks and totems with contemporary portraits, I question preconceived notions of personal
and cultural identity.  This merger questions one’s individuality, place in society and relationship with the past.  For me, each piece is a representation of a modern folktale, the characters unable to separate themselves from the influence of the greater world and its tumultuous past.

In this generation, when information can be gathered on any part of the world and its history in seconds, our own ethnic identity and past become less important as we increase our dialogue with other cultures.  It becomes more difficult to stay insulated within one’s own community and avoid the influence of other peoples.  I welcome this change and make no apologies for my use of imagery from cultures not my own.  The challenge is to make it mine by viewing other cultures through my own reverse prism, taking disparate images and merging them into an innovative whole.

All works are hand woven and stretched around painters stretchers.
