George Kocar Paintings

Curator’s Statement

George Kocar a soft spoken man who uses with a subtle, sarcastic dry wit when discussing any subject.  Conversely, his paintings are boisterous and they present humor about issues of our world in a loud and clear way!  I believe that George may use his talents as a way of communicating to augment his quiet demeanor.

His work has the finesse of professional editorial cartoons…well of course; he is a professional!  The colors, compositions, characters and style reflect the work of a confident mature artist that knows what he is doing and his societal stance.  The art appears to be slick with caustic humor and is efficient in communicating the messages that George chooses to satirize.

Artist Statement

George F. Kocar is an award-winning painter who has had over fifty solo shows and over four hundred juried and invitational exhibitions across the United States.  His work is in numerous public and private collections, most notably The Butler Institute of Art, BP America, American Greetings, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Ashland University, among many others.  He is listed in WHO’s WHO IN AMERICAN ART.

Kocar is a painter in the tradition of Red Grooms, Peter Saul, Jim Nutt, Philip Guston and others who use cartoon images to comment on society.  He believes we live in a crazy world and that society has numerous questionable practices.  He appropriates styles and images from art history and combine them to produce a new image that will hopefully make a point to the audience.  He balances tragedy and humor to produce outrageous images, that should not only make the viewer laugh but think as well.

George lives with his wife in Bay Village.
