Za! by Mike Sobeck

Curator’s Statement

In this show, Mike Sobeck paints stunning trompel’oeil slices of pizza (of all things) with the skill of a master. His sensitivity to color and realism never ceases to amaze me.  In all likeliness, viewers will salivate with hunger and head for the nearest pizza parlor after viewing these works.

However, what separates Sobeck from other photorealists are his skills that are beyond the aforementioned.  His real talent lies within his ability to create an art work that delights the viewer with a stark, innovative subject matter that surprises the viewer with its oddness.   His amalgamation of 1970’s photorealism technique with pop art sensibilities makes for an edgy body of work that fits well within today’s Postmodern art trends.

Artist Statement

Pizza can differ drastically from place to place and everyone holds his or her own personal feelings for it.  These “portraits” contain details that can allow one to decipher the pizza’s place of origin.  The portrait then becomes more expansive, whether it represents the restaurant, type of pizza or the town it’s from.  These portraits create a dialogue with the viewer, which creates something much greater than what the subject allows on its own.
