Satellite Gallery Blast Off!

Curator’s Statement

Satellite has celebrated a wonderful “Grand Opening” with a host of great artists and stunning installations!

The idea to open an installation gallery began about 10 years ago with a fantasy of owning a dilapidated urban house that would encourage artists to transform individual rooms into art environments with no constraints.  This “no holds barred” creativity would result with walls, floors, and ceilings covered in rich layers of art, and to be covered with new layers every so often.  The result would be a graffiti-like atmosphere where the previous art work would be beneath more recent art layers, showing through in a pentimenti –like manner.  Eventually the space would be transformed into one large art environment to be viewed by the community.

Well, my fantasy has begun its realization with an amazing energetic first layer of art that has placed the first brush strokes on this white canvas.  With time, their contributions will be layered over by new generations of artists’ works, but their legacy and pentimenti will always glow!

Thank You, Joan of Art, Diane Collins, Scott Evans, Nancy Frazier, June Hund, Don King, Scott Pickering and Rebekah Wilhelm, and of course my co-pilot Grace Wen for making this first journey into art space for Satellite Gallery!!
